HOW DO SPRAY TANS WORK?
Spray tanning allows people to achieve a bronze glow all year round without the health risks of tanning beds. The process is fairly simple. The solution is airbrushed onto the skin using a hand held HPLV spraying machine. Similar to a paint gun. The tanning process works because of a chemical called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This chemical is actually colorless, but it interacts with the amino acids that naturally occur in skin cells. When they come into contact, the skin cells become several shades darker. While the thought of spraying yourself with a chemical that causes your skin cells to turn brown may sound suspicious, DHA is totally safe. It has no known health risks, and it's been used for cosmetic reasons for decades.
I HAVE AN UPCOMING EVENT. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY SPRAY TAN?
Ideally, 2 days before your event. Example: Event on Saturday means spray tan on Thursday. For weddings, we highly recommend a trial spray tan a few weeks prior to the big day!
HOW LONG DO SPRAY TANS LAST?
Spray tans, on average, typically last around 7-10 days. The lifespan of your sunless tan depends largely on your aftercare, as well as your skin's natural exfoliation process. Following a good skin care regime, and staying hydrated will help to prolong the life of your tan. Unlike other beauty services, the life of a spray tan is 50% dependent on the clients preparation and maintenance while the remaining 50% relies on the artists application and solution selection. We can’t stress enough the importance of properly preparing and caring for a spray tan and following our guidelines to ensure a long-lasting tan with an even fade. SHOULD I SHOWER BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT?
No. However, if you need to shower before your appointment, please do so at least 4 hours before your scheduled appointment time. TIP: If showering, end your shower with a cold water rinse to aid in the closing of your pores. Open pores can lead to a patchy/uneven spray tan.
WILL A SPRAY TAN STAIN MY CLOTHING/ BEDDING?
Spray tan solutions with a cosmetic bronzer may rub off on fabrics prior to your first rinse. To minimize the chance of this happening, we recommend you wear loose, dark clothing after your spray tan session. Because our solutions are primarily water based, any transfer is typically washable.
CAN I GET A SPRAY TAN BEFORE VACATION?
Of course! Clients get spray tans before vacations all the time. I recommend scheduling your spray tan, 1 day before you leave for your trip. TIP: You can form a natural tan underneath your spray tan.
WILL A SPRAY TAN PROTECT ME FROM SUN EXPOSURE?
No. Spray tans do not offer any protection from harmful sun exposure. Please use SPF over your spray tan to protect your skin!
CAN I GET A SPRAY TAN WHILE PREGNANT?
YES! That being said, please check with your physician. I am happy to provide a list of our solution ingredients, so that you can make the best decision for you. DHA is only approved by the FDA for external application and we require all expectant mothers to wear both nose plugs and a face mask during the airbrush application. In addition, we require all nursing mothers to wear nipple pasties during the airbrush application.
WHEN CAN I WORKOUT AFTER A SPRAY TAN?
It is recommended that you wait 48 hours before sweating, and doing a strenuous workout. Excessive sweating can cause the spray tan to break down, wear, and become splotchy. If you find yourself craving a workout within the first 2 days, opt for something light and low impact that will result in little to no sweating. Think a light yoga practice or a nice walk!
WILL A SPRAY TAN RUIN MY MANICURE/PEDICURE?
No. After every spray tan session we take the time to wipe off both fingernails and toe nails to ensure you leave with clean nails. We also supply barrier cream prior to spray tan application to prevent any staining of the cuticles or nail beds.
WILL I TURN ORANGE?
Aureum Tan's solutions and method of application were created to give each client a natural brown color, without a hint of orange. What causes the orange you have seen? High pH levels in an individual's skin can sometimes leave an undesirable sunless color. To keep the dreaded 'orange' at bay, stay away from bar or harsh soaps before your spray tan session. We also offer complimentary pH balancing spray with every appointment to ensure you are left with your desired shade of tan.
WILL A SPRAY TAN CAUSE ACNE OR BREAKOUTS?
Not likely! Spray tans are generally water based, and therefore rarely cause clogged pores.
I HAVE A SUNBURN. CAN I STILL GET A SPRAY TAN?
Typically, no. If you have a sunburn that results in peeling, this will also peel away your spray tan. Leaving you with an uneven and patchy appearance.
WHY ARE THE BOTTOM OF MY FEET DARK?
The spray tan tent, towel, and spray room is typically saturated with a light coat of spray tan solution post sunless session. At each service we provide feet protection (sticky feet), and strongly suggest that you do not walk around barefoot. Stepping barefoot onto the towels, tent, or spray room floor could result in unwanted saturation on the bottom of the feet.
HOW LONG DOES A SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT TAKE?
A full body spray tan (express or gradual) takes about 30-45 minutes.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR DURING MY APPOINTMENT?
Wear whatever you feel most comfortable getting sprayed in. The cosmetic bronzer shouldn't permanently stain your clothes. Ladies, feel free to wear a swim suit, bra and underwear. Topless or nude is fine too! I also have disposable undergarments at no additional charge. Men, please wear boxer briefs during your sunless session.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR AFTER MY SPRAY TAN APPOINTMENT?
Please wear or bring loose, dark clothing. Think sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt! Your bra should also be on the loose side (no sports bras). If possible, I recommend no bra post sunless session.
